This isolated instance of la nuitance may well be read as l’anuitance, as both forms are plausible. The word anuitance is not otherwise attested in Anglo-Norman (the entry annuitance, meaning ‘annuity’, is not related) or Continental French, but the verb anuiter and the substantive anuitant are. The sense of nuitance is different from the one found in Continental French (‘nightly assault’), but closer to that of the verb and the noun.
