(urgerous) (1377)

[gdw]

FEW: Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

This word is uniquely attested in Rot Parl 1, and was included in AND 1 with the definition ‘keen, mettlesome’. The PROME edition of Rot Parl 1 confirms the existence of this word and translates it as ‘most keen’. Although such an adjectival formation, derived from the Latin verb urgere (‘to press, drive, compel’), is not out of the question, its absence from other dictionaries makes such an interpretation suspicious. Furthermore, the verb is not attested in Anglo-Norman (cf. urgant).

The word may be interpreted as a transmission error for the much more common ‘vigerouse’; see vigrus.
