[gdw]
The word appears in a list of bird names, as a synonym with the English ruduc i.e. ‘robin’(cf. MED ruddok(e n.), and glossing the Latin word rubusca (DMLBS rubisca 2862b) also meaning ‘robin’. Etymologically, an association with ruge seems likely, although the precise formation remains unclear. Several of the Anglo-Norman glosses in this manuscript use a final atonic -a where Anglo-Norman would normally use -e.
