As the OED (Third Edition, 2006) points out, the etymology of the word is unclear, but might be related to pic1, on the grounds that this type of ship may have had a pointed shape. At some stage, the spelling suggests, the word became associated with Picard1, although there does not seem to be any geographical justification for this.
