presbiter (1260-70)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 9,359a prsbyter; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  presbitere (*); DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  presbyter n.; MED: ; DMLBS: 2450a presbyter ]

Latin; Greek

This sole attestation of the word in Anglo-Norman is unusual. The original Greek etymon of prestre1, πρεσβύτερος, was borrowed in medieval Latin and appears in Old English. However, it only re-emerges in English in the second half of the sixteenth century, and (at least in its simplex form, i.e. with reference to the priest) is absent from Continental French.
