pontic (c.1300)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: *9,584b punctio; Gdf: 6,276b pontique; GdfC: ; TL: 7,1409 pontique; DEAF:  pontique; DMF:  ponctique; TLF: ; OED:  Pontic a.1 and n.1; MED:  pontik(e a.; DMLBS: 2345a ponticus ]
pontik

The DMF creates an unattested headword ponctique and suggests an etymology derived from punctio (‘sting’). However, the word and this interpretation are absent from the FEW. In contrast, the OED (Third Edition 2006) understands the word as a derivative of Greek Ποντικός (i.e. ‘relating to the Black Sea’) – a link confirmed by the DMLBS entry.
