poignon1 (s.xvin)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  poignonen; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

pl. poignonen

The editor of Fem2 suggests the word is merely an error for pulmons, made to rhyme with the equally suspicious reynonen (‘kidneys’), which he considers to be a ‘Germanic plural ending grafted on to a spurious French term adapted from reins’ (p.23 n.167). However, the lexical item rognon is attested in Continental French (DMF rognon) and in Anglo-Norman (reinon). The unusual plural ending aside (which ultimately is the result of the editorial expansion of an abbreviation), the passage may be less corrupt than the editor suggests.
