The OED suggests an etymology that goes back to picus, i.e. pic1, with a transfer of sense based on the fish’s pointed jaw. As it is a meaning only found in English (always spelled with a ‘k’), the word must be treated a loanword from English rather than a derivative or sense of Anglo-Norman pic1. The DMLBS, in contrast, treats the two senses together sub pica 4.
