The word meaning 'fireworks' first appears in French in 1495, and the earliest documented use of fireworks in the UK is at King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York's wedding in 1486. In its earlier use as a name, the word may be related with the occupational word 'petour' ('a professional farter') (see Family Names Pethard).
