[ gdw]
This term, only attested once as a secondary gloss in the Douce glossary and not listed in any of the other dictionaries, was previously interpreted as a derivative of peine2 and defined in AND1 as ‘comb’. Even though the lexeme is listed among household items and glosses Latin pecten, it is now believed that that definition is wrong, and that this citation belongs under penil1. The medieval gloss serves to highlight the double sense of Latin pecten: both ‘comb’ and ‘pubic bone’ (DMLBS pecten 2160b).
