It is possible that this word should be read as a variant spelling of penun, from Latin penno ‘small banner, pennon, often bearing the arms or insignia of a knight or noble’ (DMLBS 2170b). This interpretation is rendered problematic by the verb defue (understood by the editor to mean ‘undone’) which remains unclear. Such penuns were not normally worn on the body, and would be put on, rather than taken off, for a duel. It would be also possible for the word to be associated with penna a' garment made or lined with fur', though this form is otherwise unknown in AN (see the entry pane¹).
