The etymology of this term is disputed. The FEW suggests it is a compound of pappare + lardum, e.g. a smooth-talker, as a result of eating lard. The TLF suggests it is a derivative of the unattested verb *papeler “manger, marmonner (des prières)”, itself a frequentative derivative of paper ‘to eat’.
