The etymology of the word is unknown, and although it is only listed in the English dictionaries, both the MED and the OED assume a French origin of the word (presumably because of the anteriority of the attestations). The OED links this word with ‘organ ling’, which it sees as sixteenth-century alteration of the word orgays (see organ n.3).
