The word is not related to nuit1 (‘night’) or nuisir (‘to harm, damage’), but its etymology has been linked with lutin (see DMF lutin) and explained in the FEW as a derivation of the name of the Roman God Neptunus, thus suggesting that the word initially must have referred to a sea creature.
