The OED notes that English anneal, derived from the OE ǽlan meaning ‘to set on fire, burn, bake (tiles, etc.)’ may have been influenced by the French neeler though aneeler is unknown in French and neele is unknown in English. Niello appears in English only in the 19th century as a borrowing from Italian.
