bogie (s.xiii2/4)For further examples of this word with reference to plant and place names in Latin and continental French see Pop Med p. 397 n.1: examples cited there include 'Bugee, id est herba de bugea quod est locus barbarie in littore africano' (Matthaeus Silvaticus, Pandectae, 1498) which seems to reflect a sense that the derivation of the Latin and French words for barberry, from post-Classical Latin berberis, itself derived from Arabic, links the word to the 'Barbary' coast, which includes Bijaya in Algeria (see berberis).
